Keyed to the circuit most operators sell: Colombo + Kandy + Galle/south coast + Ella. For the best all-round experience, go Feb-Mar. For the lowest prices and thinnest crowds, go Sep-Oct.
Two windows, because they answer different questions. Best experience scores the weather, the headline sights and low crowds; cheapest and quietest scores only airfare and how empty it is. Special-interest seasons (skiing, Christmas markets, aurora, festivals) are kept out of the experience score and flagged on their own line, so a niche winter draw never masquerades as the best all-round month. If you care most about one thing, read that column below.
Two monsoons hit OPPOSITE coasts at OPPOSITE times. Keyed to the standard Indian circuit (west and south coast plus hills). In May and June the east coast is at its BEST while the south coast is drowning. In October and November there is no escape.

What each month actually gives you
January is one of the best months for the west/south circuit: dry, sunny south-coast beaches, clear hill country, Yala open and blue whales off Mirissa.
February is the sweet spot for the west/south circuit: the driest month islandwide-west, prime Yala leopard safari and Mirissa whales, and clear hill country.
March is a strong finish to the dry season on the west/south circuit: warm, mostly dry beaches, clear hills and still-good wildlife before the April rains build.
April is a shoulder month: the west/south circuit is still workable early on but inter-monsoon showers build, hill stations fill with domestic crowds for Sinhala and Tamil New Year, and the east coast begins its season.
May is poor for the west/south circuit as the southwest monsoon sets in and seas turn rough, but it is exactly when the east coast switches on, so redirect beach plans to Trincomalee or Arugam Bay.
June stays wet and rough on the west/south circuit under the southwest monsoon, while the east coast is at its best, so it suits an east-coast or wildlife trip more than the standard circuit.
July is the surprise good-weather month on the west/south coast, drier than May, June and October, but seas stay monsoon-rough, so it is best for the hills, wildlife and Kandy culture rather than swimming.
August mirrors July with relatively dry west-coast weather but rough seas, and it is the month of the Kandy Esala Perahera (18-28 Aug 2026), which packs out Kandy while the rest of the circuit stays quiet.
September is a low point for the west/south circuit: rain climbs again, Yala's main block usually shuts, and whale seasons are transitioning, though it is the cheapest and emptiest time to travel.
October is the wettest, worst month to visit: the second inter-monsoon soaks the whole island, so only the price and the emptiness are in your favour.
November is a transitional, still-wet month for the west/south circuit, but conditions start improving late as the south-coast beach and Mirissa whale seasons begin.
December swings back to the west/south circuit's best conditions as the dry season returns, but it is also the most expensive and most crowded month around Christmas and New Year.
Worth noting
- • Sri Lanka has two monsoons on OPPOSITE coasts at OPPOSITE times. In May-June the east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) is close to perfect while the south coast (Galle, Mirissa) is rough and drowning. 'Best time to visit Sri Lanka' has no single answer; it depends entirely on which coast you pick.
- • The common belief that you must avoid Sri Lanka from June to September is wrong for the west coast: Colombo's July (134 mm) and August (120 mm) are actually DRIER than May (316 mm), September (276 mm), October (395 mm) and November (364 mm), because the southwest monsoon shifts north to India in mid-summer. Seas stay rough for swimming, but rain is low.
- • Colombo's wettest months are October (395 mm) and November (364 mm), not the classic 'monsoon' midsummer. October-November is the second inter-monsoon and it soaks the whole island, coast to hills, at once.
- • Yala National Park's main Block 1 usually shuts completely from 1 September to about 31 October each year for drought and animal welfare, so a September safari on the classic itinerary can be a wasted stop. Other blocks and parks like Udawalawe stay open.
- • Whale-watching seasons on the two coasts are opposite: Mirissa in the south runs November to April, while Trincomalee in the east runs May to September. Book the coast that matches your month, not the famous name.
- • December to March is peak everything on the south coast: best weather, but also the highest hotel rates and the biggest crowds, spiking hard over Christmas and New Year. September and October are the cheapest and emptiest months, but that is exactly because the weather is at its worst.
- • The Sri Lanka tourist ETA is FREE for Indian passport holders as of 25 May 2026 (a 30-day, double-entry authorisation), but it is still mandatory: you must apply online at the official eta.gov.lk before you fly, and airlines can check it at the Indian airport. Only Business ETAs still carry a fee (about USD 35).
- • The Kandy Esala Perahera, one of Asia's grandest festivals, is deliberately timed to the drier July-August window and packs out Kandy. In 2026 the processions run 18-28 August, climaxing with the Grand Randoli Perahera on 27 August and the Day Perahera on 28 August, so book Kandy far ahead or route around those dates. It moves each year with the lunar calendar.
