When to visit South Korea, month by month.
Keyed to the circuit most operators sell: Seoul + Nami Island + Jeju. For the best all-round experience, go Apr/Oct. For the lowest prices and thinnest crowds, go Jan/Mar. Coming for the seasonal draw? For skiing: Jan-Feb.
Two windows, because they answer different questions. Best experience scores the weather, the headline sights and low crowds; cheapest and quietest scores only airfare and how empty it is. Special-interest seasons (skiing, Christmas markets, aurora, festivals) are kept out of the experience score and flagged on their own line, so a niche winter draw never masquerades as the best all-round month. What each month actually gives you
Come for winter and skiing, not sightseeing comfort: Seoul is bitterly cold, dry and clear, and there is no blossom or foliage.
Still cold-winter and ski-focused, but avoid the Seollal window (16 to 18 Feb 2026) when the country shuts and transport jams.
A blossom package sold on March dates is a trap for Seoul: only Jeju blooms in late March while Seoul stays bare.
The best blossom month and one of the two sweet spots, but you pay for it in crowds and hotel prices.
The single best all-round month: warm, dry, green, before the rains, though airfare from India climbs with school holidays.
Good early, then the jangma rains arrive around the third week: the front reaches Korea roughly 19 to 25 June.
Avoid if you can: July is the wettest month of the year in Seoul, roughly 414mm, the peak of the monsoon.
Hot, humid and still wet, with peak typhoon risk and a packed Jeju: a difficult month to sightsee.
Improving fast and often lovely by late month, but Chuseok (24 to 26 Sep 2026) shuts the country and jams every route.
The other sweet spot and the best autumn month: crisp clear weather and foliage, but a fixed October date is a coin flip on the leaves.
A quiet, underrated shoulder month: foliage lingers in Seoul and the south early on, prices and crowds fall away.
Cold, dry winter and the start of ski season, but airfare from India peaks over Christmas and New Year.
Worth noting
- • A March package sold on cherry-blossom imagery will not deliver blossom in Seoul. In 2026 Seoul's first bloom is forecast for ~3 April and full bloom ~10 April; only Jeju and Busan bloom in late March (~25 March). A late-March Seoul itinerary photographs bare trees.
- • Cherry blossom and autumn foliage are both fixed-date coin flips. Foliage has been trending a few days later each year with warming. Book a fixed date and you are gambling on the leaves and petals.
- • Seollal (Lunar New Year, 16-18 Feb 2026) and Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving, 24-26 Sep 2026) shut shops, restaurants and museums and jam every train, bus and flight as the whole country travels home. Both are lunar and move 10-20 days each year, so verify against your travel dates.
- • July is the wettest month of the year. Seoul averages ~414mm of rain in July alone, and summer (June to August) delivers about 63% of the city's entire annual rainfall during the jangma monsoon.
- • Jeju in high summer is a trap: the warmest sea and beach weather (July-August) coincide with monsoon rain, peak typhoon risk (August to early September) and the Korean domestic-holiday crush, so the island is at once wet, jammed and expensive.
- • Indians cannot use K-ETA and there is no visa on arrival. Indian passport holders must obtain a full C-3 sticker visa in India before travel; the K-ETA waiver extended to 31 December 2026 applies only to visa-exempt nationalities, which does not include India. Every arrival must also file the online e-Arrival Card.
- • May and October are the sweet spots, and everyone knows it. The same months that rate best for weather rate worst for cost and crowds, because inbound and domestic travel both peak then. November trades a little foliage and warmth for markedly lower prices and emptier sights.
- • Winter is genuinely cold, not just cool. Under the Siberian high, Seoul's January averages a high of ~2C and a low of ~-5.5C with dry, windy, snowy days and short daylight. It is ski weather, not city-strolling weather, though Jeju stays much milder.
Local terms
- monsoon.
- The rainy season. In much of Southeast Asia the coasts have opposite monsoons, so one side is wet while the other is dry.
- Seollal.
- Korean Lunar New Year, around late January or February, when shops and transport shut or jam for several days.
- Chuseok.
- Korean harvest thanksgiving, around September or October, another period when the country slows and transport is packed.
- jangma.
- Korea’s summer monsoon, roughly late June to late July, delivering a large share of the year’s rain.
