When to visit Georgia, month by month.
Keyed to the circuit most operators sell: Tbilisi + Kazbegi/Gudauri + Batumi. For the best all-round experience, go May/Sep. For the lowest prices and thinnest crowds, go Feb-Mar. Coming for the seasonal draw? For skiing: Jan-Feb.
Two windows, because they answer different questions. Best experience scores the weather, the headline sights and low crowds; cheapest and quietest scores only airfare and how empty it is. Special-interest seasons (skiing, Christmas markets, aurora, festivals) are kept out of the experience score and flagged on their own line, so a niche winter draw never masquerades as the best all-round month. If you care most about one thing, read that column below.

What each month actually gives you
Skip the circuit and come only for skiing or winter Tbilisi; the Kazbegi day trip is a coin toss because the Jvari Pass shuts in snow.
Come for the best ski snow of the year; the lowland circuit is cold and the Kazbegi road stays avalanche-prone.
A cheap, quiet shoulder for Tbilisi with late-season snow still skiable, but the mountains and coast are not yet ready.
Green, mild and cheap for Tbilisi and the vineyards; the Kazbegi road is reopening but the coast is still too cold to swim.
One of the two best all-round months: green Caucasus, comfortable Tbilisi and open roads, just before summer prices bite.
Great for green mountains and the start of Batumi beach weather, but fares hit their yearly high and crowds are building.
Beach-and-mountain summer with everything open, but Tbilisi is hot, Batumi is crowded and wet, and it is the priciest, busiest stretch.
The hottest, busiest and most expensive month; go only if you want warm Black Sea swims and can tolerate heat and crowds.
The single best month: warm dry Tbilisi, clear open mountains, the rtveli wine harvest in Kakheti, and easing crowds after summer.
The other best month: golden vineyards, ongoing harvest, mild Tbilisi and Tbilisoba, with the mountain road still open early in the month.
Cheap and empty for Tbilisi and the cellars, but the mountains are shutting down, no skiing yet, and Batumi is at its wettest.
Festive Tbilisi and New Year, but an early-December ski package can reach a resort whose lifts have not opened, and fares peak at Christmas.
Worth noting
- • The Kazbegi day trip is in almost every Georgia package, yet the road it uses, the Georgian Military Highway over the Jvari Pass, closes for hours to days in winter heavy snow and avalanche risk. Every winter Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) gets cut off at least once. Check roads.ge before a winter trip; the Kobi-Gudauri cable car can sometimes bypass a closed section.
- • Gudauri's lifts often do not open until the last week of December, so an early-December ski package can arrive at a resort that is still closed. The 2025-26 season opened 27 December 2025; Bakuriani's Kokhta slopes opened 20 December.
- • Batumi is subtropical and one of the wettest places in Georgia, with about 2,435mm of rain a year, more than four times Tbilisi's 510mm. November is its wettest month at 312mm, and it rains heavily even through the summer beach season.
- • The Black Sea at Batumi is only comfortably swimmable from about June to September (sea 22-25C). In April the sea is still 11C and in winter it drops to 9C, so a spring beach add-on is a non-starter.
- • The rtveli wine harvest is roughly September to mid-October, not a single fixed festival day; it moves each year with the weather and runs village by village across Kakheti, so flexibility beats booking one exact date.
- • Georgia is NOT visa-free for a plain Indian passport. Indians need a Georgia e-visa (about USD 20) unless they hold a valid visa or residence permit from the US, UK, Schengen, Canada, Australia, Japan and certain other countries, in which case they can enter visa-free for up to a year. Since 1 January 2026, all tourists must also carry travel medical insurance of at least 30,000 GEL (about USD 11,000) or risk being refused entry.
- • Tbilisi summers are genuinely hot: July and August average about 26C with daytime highs past 31C and records above 40C, while winters are cold with a January mean of 3.4C. It is a continental-leaning climate, not a mild one.
- • July and August are the peak: the busiest, hottest and most expensive months, with Batumi traffic gridlocked and hotels and trains booked out. Georgia then has a long low season from November to April, and the calmest sweet spots are mid-May to early July and early September to mid-October.
