Keyed to the circuit most operators sell: Munich + Neuschwanstein + Rhine + Berlin. For the best all-round experience, go May-Jun. For the lowest prices and thinnest crowds, go Jan-Feb. Coming for the seasonal draw? For Christmas markets: Nov-Dec.
Two windows, because they answer different questions. Best experience scores the weather, the headline sights and low crowds; cheapest and quietest scores only airfare and how empty it is. Special-interest seasons (skiing, Christmas markets, aurora, festivals) are kept out of the experience score and flagged on their own line, so a niche winter draw never masquerades as the best all-round month. What each month actually gives you
January is the cheapest, emptiest month but also the coldest and darkest, with markets essentially gone and the Rhine boats not scheduled.
February stays cold and dark but cheap and uncrowded, a value-hunter's month with the castle open and everything else dormant.
March is a cold, quiet shoulder month; the castle and cities are open but the Rhine boats and beer gardens have not started.
April opens the season: mild weather arrives, the Rhine scenic boats begin, and crowds are still manageable.
May is one of the best all-round months: warm and sunny, full Rhine season, castle open, beer gardens live and crowds not yet at peak.
June brings long warm days and the full Rhine season, but summer airfare and crowds start climbing hard.
July is warm and fully open but is peak everything: highest airfare, worst Neuschwanstein queues and heavy rain risk.
August mirrors July: warm, fully open, and peak-priced and crowded, with Neuschwanstein at its busiest.
September is a top pick: still-warm weather, full Rhine season and Oktoberfest from Sep 19, though Munich hotels spike for the festival.
Early October catches the last Oktoberfest days and the closing Rhine season; after Oct 4 prices ease and crowds thin as autumn sets in.
November is cold, grey and low-value for sightseeing until the Christmas markets open in the last week, but airfare is among the year's cheapest.
December is peak Christmas-market season and the reason many pick this trip, but it is cold, dark, pricey at the holidays, and the flagship markets shut on Dec 24 at ~14:00.
Worth noting
- • It is market-by-market, not city-by-city: Munich's and Nuremberg's flagship Christmas markets close on Dec 24 around 14:00 and do NOT reopen 'between the years', so a Dec 27-31 trip can arrive to shuttered flagship stalls, while Berlin's Gendarmenmarkt runs to Dec 31, Nuremberg's separate WinterDorf and several Berlin markets run into early January.
- • Berlin's Pergamonmuseum is fully closed for renovation until 4 June 2027, so the Pergamon Altar, Ishtar Gate, Processional Way and Market Gate of Miletus are all unavailable on Museum Island right now; even after the 2027 reopening the Ishtar Gate/Processional Way stay closed into the 2030s. A separate building, the Pergamonmuseum Das Panorama, is open with some Altar frieze originals.
- • The scenic scheduled Rhine (KD) boats through the Loreley valley run only roughly early April to mid-October. A 'winter Rhine cruise' exists but sails only if enough passengers pre-book, so a December-February Rhine boat plan may simply not run.
- • Neuschwanstein is open almost year-round on timed tickets, but it is closed on Dec 24, 25, 31 and Jan 1, and switches from summer hours to shorter winter hours (guided tours 10:00-16:00) from Oct 16. There is no walk-up-anytime option: every visit is a guided tour at a fixed slot, and latecomers are refused.
- • Neuschwanstein draws roughly 1.5 million visitors a year, heavily concentrated in July and August, when midday ticket queues can exceed 90 minutes and you may only get a tour slot two to three hours later. Buying the timed ticket online in advance is close to essential in summer.
- • Oktoberfest is mostly in September, not October: in 2026 it runs Sep 19 to Oct 4, and it always ends on the first Sunday of October, so travellers who plan 'October in Munich for Oktoberfest' can miss all but the first few days.
- • Munich hotel rates run about 2-4x normal during Oktoberfest, with the Italian Weekend (around Sep 25-27, 2026) and German Unity Day (Oct 3) the priciest nights, so September's cheaper shoulder-season airfare is offset by a Munich hotel spike unless you book far ahead or stay outside the festival dates.
- • For Indian buyers the weather-worst months are often the wallet-best: India-Europe return airfares are typically cheapest in January-February and November and peak in June-August and around Christmas, a swing of roughly 35-45%.
