Keyed to the circuit most operators sell: Brussels + Bruges + Ghent. For the best all-round experience, go Apr-May. For the lowest prices and thinnest crowds, go Jan-Feb. Coming for the seasonal draw? For Christmas markets: Nov-Dec.
Two windows, because they answer different questions. Best experience scores the weather, the headline sights and low crowds; cheapest and quietest scores only airfare and how empty it is. Special-interest seasons (skiing, Christmas markets, aurora, festivals) are kept out of the experience score and flagged on their own line, so a niche winter draw never masquerades as the best all-round month. What each month actually gives you
January is the cheapest, emptiest month and the markets have just closed, so come now only if quiet and low cost beat festive sparkle.
February is still cheap and quiet, and its one big draw is the UNESCO Carnival of Binche (15 to 17 Feb 2026), a day trip from Brussels.
March is a cheap, quiet shoulder month with improving light and no crowds, a solid value pick if you do not need a festival or a market.
April is the driest month with pleasant light and moderate crowds, and it adds the Zythos beer festival, making it a strong all-round choice.
May is one of the best all-round months: mild, long days, good light, and crowds and prices still short of the summer peak.
June brings the warmest comfortable weather and long days but rising crowds and prices, a good month if you accept early-summer busyness.
July is festival-rich (Ghent Festivities, Tomorrowland) but also the most crowded and expensive, and Bruges genuinely feels overrun with day-trippers.
August is peak-crowd, peak-price and the wettest month, but 2026 carries the biennial Brussels Flower Carpet (13 to 16 Aug), a rare draw worth timing to.
September is a top all-round pick: still-mild weather, easing crowds and prices, and the Belgian Beer Weekend on the Grand-Place.
October is a quiet, good-value shoulder month with autumn light and easy crowds, ideal if you want the cities calm and cheap without winter cold.
November is cold and grey but cheap and quiet, and from about the 20th to 27th the Christmas markets open, so late November blends low prices with early festive sparkle.
December is the Christmas-market month, the single best time for festive atmosphere, at the cost of the busiest winter crowds and the highest winter prices.
Worth noting
- • The month barely changes the trip. Brussels' warmest month (July, ~18.5C mean) and coldest (January, ~3.7C mean) differ by under 15C, and the itinerary is indoor-heavy museums, chocolate shops, churches and cafes. The real difference between a good and bad month is a coat, not a cancelled plan.
- • Belgian Christmas markets do not shut on 24 or 25 December like Germany's typically do. Brussels Winter Wonders runs to 3 January 2027, so the Christmas-to-New-Year gap is still fully festive.
- • Bruges keeps a winter festival going into February. In the 2026-27 edition, Winter Glow (ice rink, light trail) runs to 14 February 2027, well past the Christmas market stalls, which close in early January. If you want winter atmosphere without December crowds, early February still delivers lights and skating.
- • The Brussels Flower Carpet only happens in even-numbered years. It fills the Grand-Place with about hundreds of thousands of flowers for four days around 15 August, biennially; 2026 (13 to 16 August) is on, 2027 is not.
- • August is the wettest month, not July. Brussels averages ~90 mm of rain in August versus ~80 mm in July, and both are wetter than any winter month, Belgian rain is a summer thing as much as a winter one.
- • Bruges is small enough that July-August day-trippers genuinely change the experience. The compact old town and canals get packed at midday in peak season in a way that Brussels, a bigger city, absorbs more easily.
- • April is the driest month with improving sun, not summer. Brussels averages just ~45 mm of rain in April with ~5.5 sunshine hours a day, making spring statistically better for dry walking weather than the rainier summer.
- • The UNESCO Carnival of Binche moves every year. It is fixed to the three days before Ash Wednesday, so it swings with the Lent/Easter calendar, 15 to 17 February in 2026, but a day trip from Brussels whenever it falls.
