When to visit New Zealand, month by month.
Keyed to the circuit most operators sell: Auckland + Rotorua + Queenstown + Milford Sound + Franz Josef. For the best all-round experience, go Feb-Mar. For the lowest prices and thinnest crowds, go May/Mar.
Two windows, because they answer different questions. Best experience scores the weather, the headline sights and low crowds; cheapest and quietest scores only airfare and how empty it is. Special-interest seasons (skiing, Christmas markets, aurora, festivals) are kept out of the experience score and flagged on their own line, so a niche winter draw never masquerades as the best all-round month. If you care most about one thing, read that column below.

What each month actually gives you
Peak everything: warmest weather and longest days, but the most expensive and most crowded month, and paradoxically the single wettest month of the year in Milford Sound.
The best-value slice of summer: still warm, days still long, but the least-wet warm month in Milford and crowds and prices easing off the January peak.
One of the two best months to go: warm settled autumn, autumn gold starting in Central Otago, Great Walks still open, and crowds and prices dropping.
The other best month: peak autumn colour in Queenstown and Arrowtown, quiet, good value, but the Great Walks season closes at the end of the month and the south starts cooling fast.
The low season: cheapest and emptiest month of the year, but the Great Walks are closed, the south is cold and Milford is very wet, so it suits budget and calm over big-ticket hiking.
Winter begins: cold and short days, but the ski fields open mid-month and, by rainfall alone, June is actually Milford's least-wet month, though avalanche-season road closures are the trade-off.
Deep winter and the peak of the Queenstown ski season: great if you came to ski, but the coldest month everywhere, Milford's road is at its most closure-prone, and Queenstown hotels hit a winter price peak.
Still deep winter and prime ski season, marginally lengthening days, but the same winter trade-offs apply: cold everywhere, closure-prone Milford Road, and a Queenstown ski-price peak.
Early spring shoulder: prices and crowds low, late-season skiing still running in Queenstown, and the weather warming, but Great Walks are not yet open and Milford is getting wetter again.
Spring shoulder with the best combination of low crowds and improving weather, and the Great Walks season opens on 1 November right at month's end, but ski closes and Milford is at a wet spring peak.
Late spring and a smart pre-summer window: Great Walks reopen on 1 November, weather is warming and days lengthen, with crowds and prices not yet at summer peak.
Summer and the Christmas package season arrive: warm, long days and full activity, but from mid-December it becomes the most expensive and among the most crowded windows of the year.
Worth noting
- • Milford Sound is one of the wettest inhabited places on Earth: NIWA 1991 to 2020 normals put its annual rainfall at 6,545mm, and there is no dry month. Even the driest month, June, still averages 440mm, more than three times a typical London month.
- • January, the month most Christmas and New Year packages arrive, is Milford Sound's single WETTEST month at 667mm average, higher than any other month of the year.
- • Milford Sound is sold as a day trip from Queenstown, but it is about 291km and roughly 5 hours of driving each way. Operators depart very early and return late, so it is 10-plus hours in a coach around a 1 to 2 hour cruise.
- • You cannot walk to the Franz Josef ice on foot. DOC states the river has cut off access up the valley, so the guided valley walk is only a 1.7km, roughly 30-minute stroll to a distant viewpoint; helicopters are the only safe way onto the glacier.
- • The only way onto the Franz Josef ice is a weather-dependent heli-hike, and packages routinely allocate a single night in Franz Josef. One cloudy day and the flight is cancelled with no second chance, so a glacier landing is never guaranteed by the itinerary.
- • The multi-day Great Walks (Milford Track, Routeburn) only run a booked season from 1 November to 30 April. Outside it (1 May to 31 October) they revert to serious alpine backcountry with snow, ice and short days, so a winter package cannot deliver the classic Milford or Routeburn hut walk.
- • Indian passport holders cannot use the cheap NZeTA that visa-waiver nationals use; India is not a visa-waiver country, so Indians must apply for and hold a full New Zealand Visitor Visa before travelling. There is no visa on arrival.
- • March to April is the settled-autumn sweet spot (stable weather, autumn gold, Great Walks still open, quieter, cheaper), whereas December to February is peak everything on the South Island: warmest and busiest, and the priciest airfares and hotels of the year.
- • From 2026, Milford Sound is set to become one of four NZ natural attractions charging foreign tourists an access fee (reported at roughly NZ$20 to NZ$40), on top of the cruise and any national park parking fees, so budget an extra per-person charge that did not exist before.
