When to visit Greece, month by month.
Keyed to the circuit most operators sell: Athens + Santorini + Mykonos. For the best all-round experience, go Sep/May. For the lowest prices and thinnest crowds, go Jan-Feb.
Two windows, because they answer different questions. Best experience scores the weather, the headline sights and low crowds; cheapest and quietest scores only airfare and how empty it is. Special-interest seasons (skiing, Christmas markets, aurora, festivals) are kept out of the experience score and flagged on their own line, so a niche winter draw never masquerades as the best all-round month. What each month actually gives you
Skip the islands in January: Santorini and Mykonos are largely shut, but Athens is mild, near-empty and cheap if a city break is all you want.
February is the cheapest, emptiest month, but Santorini and Mykonos are still closed and the sea is at its coldest, so it is an Athens-only proposition.
The shoulder is only just stirring in March: Athens is pleasant and quiet, but the islands and ferries stay on winter footing until the very end of the month.
The islands wake up in April: Orthodox Easter on 12 April 2026 reopens most Santorini and Mykonos hotels, making April the first genuine month for the full circuit, though the sea is still cold.
May is one of the two best months for this circuit: islands fully open, warm sunny weather, sea warming, and crowds and prices still below the summer peak.
June is a strong all-rounder before the peak: warm seas arriving, islands buzzing and the summer festival opening, though heat, prices and crowds are all ramping up.
July is peak everything, for better and worse: the islands are in full swing, but Athens bakes above 33C with midday Acropolis heat closures, the Meltemi howls, and prices and crowds are near their highest.
August is the busiest, hottest and priciest month: the sea is at its warmest, but Athens is furnace-hot with midday Acropolis closures, and the 15 August holiday piles Greek travellers onto already packed islands.
September is the other standout month: islands still fully open, sea at its warmest and calmest, the extreme heat easing, and crowds and prices dropping steadily through the month.
October is last call for the full circuit: the islands wind down toward month-end, but early-to-mid October still offers warm sea, mild weather and thin crowds at low prices.
In November the islands are closing: most Santorini and Mykonos venues shut and ferries thin out, though Athens stays mild and very cheap.
December is a city-only month: Santorini and Mykonos are largely shut for winter, but Athens offers a festive, mild, uncrowded Christmas, with pricier flights from India.
Worth noting
- • Santorini and Mykonos effectively hibernate in winter. Mykonos airport handled just 6,709 passengers in January 2025, against roughly 1.6 million for the full year, so most hotels, restaurants and beach clubs are shut from about November to March.
- • The direct Santorini to Mykonos ferry only runs from about April to October. In winter you have to route via Athens (Piraeus) or a third island such as Naxos or Paros.
- • The Acropolis now shuts in the afternoon during summer heatwaves. Greece's Culture Ministry closed it from roughly midday to 5pm on multiple days in July 2024 and July 2025, when Athens hit about 43C, because the marble hill has no shade.
- • Entry to the Acropolis is capped at 20,000 visitors a day with compulsory timed slots (introduced 2024), and peak summer slots sell out several days ahead. The adult ticket is 30 euros in 2026.
- • The hottest month is also the windiest. The Meltemi, a strong dry northerly, peaks from mid-July to mid-August at force 5-7 gusting 8-10, funnelling 30-35 knot gusts through the Cyclades and cancelling the smaller fast ferries.
- • Santorini caps cruise passengers at 8,000 per day (from 2025), after pre-cap surges of 11,000 to 17,000 day-trippers, and a 20 euro per-person cruise fee applies at Santorini and Mykonos from 1 June to 30 September.
- • The sea is coldest in February and March (about 15C), not January, and does not reach its warmest (24-25C) until August. Even at peak, Cyclades water stays a little cooler than the mainland because the Meltemi keeps churning it.
- • The island hotel season really starts at Orthodox Easter, which is 12 April in 2026, not on a fixed calendar date, and 15 August (Assumption) is a second peak, the 'summer Easter', when Greek domestic travellers pack the islands on top of foreign tourists.
