When to visit Denmark, month by month.
Keyed to the circuit most operators sell: Copenhagen. For the best all-round experience, go May-Jun. For the lowest prices and thinnest crowds, go Jan-Feb. Coming for the seasonal draw? For Christmas markets: Nov-Dec.
Two windows, because they answer different questions. Best experience scores the weather, the headline sights and low crowds; cheapest and quietest scores only airfare and how empty it is. Special-interest seasons (skiing, Christmas markets, aurora, festivals) are kept out of the experience score and flagged on their own line, so a niche winter draw never masquerades as the best all-round month. What each month actually gives you
Skip January unless all you want is a quiet, cheap city walk, because Tivoli padlocks its gates after January 3 and daylight is barely 7 hours.
February is a cheap, empty and slightly brighter city, but still cold with Tivoli closed and no snow or aurora product to rescue a winter break.
March is a shoulder gamble: light and prices are good, but Tivoli usually stays shut until the spring reopening, which was April 7 in 2026 and moves with Easter.
April is a good-value spring pick once Tivoli reopens (April 7 in 2026), pairing the driest month of the year with fast-lengthening days.
May is one of the two best months to go: mild, long, comparatively dry days, Tivoli fully open, and prices still below the July peak.
June delivers peak-quality weather with the longest days of the year and Tivoli in full swing, so long as you accept that crowds and prices are climbing fast.
July is the warmest and liveliest month but also the wettest, priciest and most crowded, so pick it for the buzz rather than the bargain.
August is warm and fully open with harbour swimming at its best, but it is the single wettest month of the year and still peak-priced.
September is the value sweet spot: still mild, Tivoli open until the 20th, airfare from India near its cheapest, and crowds thinning.
October is quiet and cheap with Tivoli's Halloween season running, though the weather turns grey and short-dayed.
November is the low-season low point until mid-month, when the Christmas markets and Tivoli's Christmas season light up the dark.
December is the winter exception worth booking, with Christmas markets and Tivoli Christmas in full swing, dark and cold but genuinely festive.
Worth noting
- • In January, Tivoli is a padlocked gate, but New Year is fine. The Christmas season runs through to January 3, so the park is open on New Year's Day; it then closes for roughly three months until the spring reopening (April 7 in 2026). A January city break gets no Tivoli.
- • Denmark has no aurora or snow product to rescue a winter city break. Copenhagen sits at about 55 degrees north, too far south for reliable Northern Lights, and while snow falls on roughly 20 days a year it is generally not abundant. Winter here is mostly grey and damp, not a snow-globe.
- • The wettest month is August (80mm over 10 days), not winter. Copenhagen's rain is a summer phenomenon: June and July each get about 65mm, while March and April are the driest at 35mm. Pack a rain jacket for a July trip, not just a January one.
- • Midwinter daylight is only about 7 hours. On December 21 the sun rises around 8:37 and sets around 15:38, with just 1 hour of sunshine a day on average, so a December sightseeing day is short and dim.
- • You can swim in the harbour, but the water never really warms up. The Oresund peaks at only about 18C in August and is described as cold for swimming even then; lifeguards staff the harbour baths only from June to September.
- • Tivoli's spring reopening date moves with Easter, so a March or April trip needs checking. The 2026 summer season opens April 7 (Easter Sunday April 5); because Easter shifts, Easter 2027 falls on March 28, which can pull the reopening into late March. Confirm on tivoli.dk before booking shoulder-season dates.
- • Airfare from India is cheapest roughly when the city is at its least appealing. Aggregator data points to September to October and the January to February window as the low-fare months and June to July summer as the dearest, the reverse of the weather calendar.
- • The Hamlet castle day-trip shrinks in winter. Kronborg in Helsingor drops to shorter hours (10:00 to 16:00 weekdays) and closes on Mondays from November to December, and is shut on December 24, 25, 31 and January 1, so an off-season castle day needs planning around the calendar.
